Appearance & Odor: A colorless, oily liquid that darkens to yellow/brown/black when exposed to air and light, with a distinctive almond-like scent.
Chemical Nature: A heterocyclic aldehyde with the formula \(C_{5}H_{4}O_{2}\), derived from dehydrating pentose sugars (like xylose) from plant matter (corncobs, bran).
Solubility: Soluble in most organic solvents (alcohols, chloroform) but has limited solubility in water.
Reactivity: Can polymerize violently with strong acids or bases, creating fire/explosion hazards.Forms condensation products with phenols, amines, and urea.
Applications
Selective Extraction in Oil Refining
Furfural is employed in refining base oils and fuels by selectively removing aromatic impurities. This enhances the oxidation stability and performance of lubricants and diesel fractions.
Preparation of Furan Derivatives
It is a core starting material to synthesize furfuryl alcohol and other furan-containing materials. It is used for applications involving cast resin with high-temperature resistance and formulations of thermosets.
Part of Industrial Abrasives & Friction Materials
The furfural gives added structural support to materials such as abrasive wheels, brake pads, and refractory linings, especially those that encounter extreme temperatures.
